Kailahun District is a district in the Eastern Province of Sierra Leone. Its capital and largest city is Kailahun. The other major towns in the district include Segbwema, Koindu, Pendembu and Daru. As of 2010, the district has a population of 395,957 [2].
The District of Kailahun borders the Republic of Liberia to the east, Kono District to the north and Kenema District to the west. The total area of the district is 4,859 km Sq. T. The population of Kailahun District is largely from the Mende ethnic group and the Mende language is widely spoken in the district.

Kailahun District is governed with a district council form of government, which is headed by a District Council Chairman, who is responsible for the general management of the district and for seeing that all local laws are enforced. The District Council Chairman is elected directly by the residents of the district of Kailahun. The current chairman of Kailahun district council is Tom Nyuma of the Sierra Leone People's Party (SLPP). Nyuma won the July 2008 Sierra Leone local council elections in a lanslide with 73% against the All People's Congress (APC) opponent Solomon Musa. Nyuma replaced fellow SLPP member Augustine Kortu who was the District Council Chairman until July 2008. [3]
Kailahun District currently has nine Representatives in the Parliament of Sierra Leone, of which eight were elected for 5 year team. The district is a stronghold of the opposition Sierra Leone People's Party (SLPP). In the 2007 Sierra Leone Presidential and Parliamentary elections the SLPP won all nine seats in parliaments from Kailahun District. Below is a list of representatives and their affiliations.

The population of Kailahun District is almost entirely from the Mende.
Kailahun has a mixed economy, made up of small-scale mining as well as agricultural production of coffee, cacao and rice.
